Maybe One Day

A man finds a reason to live in a life monotony and one day decides to just do so. This man realises his life is monotonous as he counts everything he does in a day, down to brushing his teeth, making tea, the weather. He yearns for change and questions his existence. After realising his need for change he decides not to walk for work, but instead to live which you no longer see the bored, drone like character but the free and ecstatic man that he yearned to be. He lived. Who doesn't want to feel like this sometimes?

The New Boy

This short film tells the story of a young African boy who's new to his class in an Irish school. The New Boy wonderfully interpolates the contrasts of colours between his old happy life in Africa, and his new life in Ireland. At first he finds it difficult to fit in as he is still traumatised from his life in Africa, but despite the traumatisation carrying on into seemingly innocent situations, compared to seeing his father getting murdered by the militia, he eventually gets along with the rest of the class with a touch of humour about the teacher and her ordering the class to raise their hands whenever something happens. Enjoy. It almost brought me to tears :O

Assassin's Creed: Lineage

Released in time to coincide with the release of Assassin's Creed 2, Lineage sets the scene for what happens in the storyline before Desmond Miles jumps into the Animus again and relive the story of Ezio Auditore da Firenze in number two. In 15th century Firezne, Giovanni Auditore da Firenze uncovers a plot to assassinate the Duke of Milano. From this he discovers a conspiracy that reaches as far as Rodrigo Borgia, the future Pope Alexander VI, and with the help of Lorenzo di Medici Il Magnifico, attempts to stop them in their tracks. This for me is a brilliant short film, not least for the fact that I'm a personal Assassin's Creed fan, but the way they use green screen effects with rendered environments of 15th century Firenze and how the darking lighting effects fits in with the mise-en-scene, as well as it's fictionalisation of true historic effects, such as the Duke of Milano conspiracy, along with, as Giovanni's son Ezio finds out in Assassin's Creed 2, a conspiracy to murder Lorenzo di Medici. This short film however cannot, and does not, prepare the viewer, and indeed the player, for how Assassin's Creed 2 ultimately ends however...

Oh my deary days, this could potentially be one of the greatest action films of our generation without us even knowing it. It has to be watched. It speaks for itself. Makes Rambo look like a gunshy rookie :) even the lady doesn't get a chance in this epic :O

Hitler Downfall Parody (Not Really)

For all those that have seen millions upon millions of these Hitler parodies on YouTube and elsewhere, here's the exact same scene from Der Untergang, minus the social commentary, minus the nonsensical subtitles. Some may not be able to take this scene seriously, others will find their emotion of it change. Der Untergang's a brilliant film. It's depiction of Hitler and his inner circle (which critics say have been humanised) is perfectly captured, along with the other surrounding events in the last 2 weeks of the war, such as the Operation Clausewitz, The Battle of Berlin and murders of the Goebbels children. The sets used and camera angles were used as such that it makes you felt like you were in that bunker in the last 10 days going through the artillery bombing, Hitler's descent to madness and just that feeling that you may not get out alive, as I imagine Traudl Junge (whose memoirs are which the film is based on) felt during that time, despite her original reluctance to leave the bunker. If you like war films, or wanted to see a war film with the best depiction of Hitler (in German, played by a German-speaking actor, Bruno Ganz, rather than an English actor) then Der Untergang will be right up your street.

HELLO MR GASMAN!

Funny scene from series 1 of Bottom where the gasman comes round to check their meter (and mention they don't use gas because they don't know what it is, though in fact stealing their neighbour's gas, played by Brian Glover) and to stop him from leaving they mercilessly beat him up, then nearly let him indulge in his hobby of bus surfing.

Greatest Film Ever?

Of course it's impossible for everyone to agree on an overall best film ever, because, after all, we're all human and have different tastes, but surely for those who have seen this movie it'll rank highly, or indeed be their favourite. For me, it has to be Schindler's List. Personally I think that this movie is perfect in many ways, for example, it virtually accurately portrays the events of what happened in World War 2 Krakow, the enforced inhabitation and subsequent forced removal from the Ghetto, down to the cold-blooded killing, including children, who tried to escape being sent to the Plasow concentration camp and how Oskar Schindler, the hero/anti-hero of the film, managed to use his position in the Nazi party, and the money made from hiring Jewish slave labour, to protect and eventually rescue his 'workers' from the hands of the Nazi killing machine and from the hands of the sadistic and evil Amon Goeth, the commandant of the Krakow-Plasow camp. It's good that the film didn't go all 'Roots' with portraying such a horrific chapter of history and try to merely sugar coat the film to please the wider and younger audience. The film's documentarian style of filming, as well as shooting almost the whole film in black and white, gives it a very dark, realistic and timeless feel to the film, as if it was the actual filmed events of the 1940s. Schindler's List as a whole is filled with poignancy and symbols, such as the girl in the red dress, the Sabbath scene at the start before going to black and white, the flame when the workers get to celebrate the Sabbath and right at the end, when the film turns back to colour and you see the real Schindlerjuden survivors at Mt. Zion in Jerusalem to places small rocks on Oskar Schindler's grave with the actors that played them (except Liam Neeson who places a rose on Oskar's grave). Steven Spielberg did this film justice portraying this film and fully deserved the Oscar for Best Director, whereas perhaps Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes deserved Oscars (damn you Tom Hanks & Tommy Lee Jones, though you're forgiven for Saving Private Ryan and Natural Born Killers) for their portrayal of Schindler and Goeth respectively.

No words can describe what emotions that Schindler's List puts the viewer through, and no words can describe just how brilliant this film is, so my advice is, if you haven't seen already, do so. See why Schindler's List won 7 Oscars (though could have easily been 10) for it could well be the greatest movie of all time.

This vid makes me think: (besides 'Is he on drugs?') 'Why didn't he say this after beating Michael Spinks instead of a bum like Savarese?' Would have been more appropriate back in 1988, then say he's gonna eat Evander Holyfield's kids instead. Funny as hell though :)

Die Hard With A Vengeance Gallon Jug Riddle

Did the Gallon Jug riddle on Die Hard With A Vengeance leave you completely confused and flustered? As much as it sort of explains part of the riddle, just not all the riddle, so I found this on youtube, and hopefully it should clear things up :) Can't believe this film only 48% on Rotten Tomatoes :( I thought the story and bad guy were better in this than Die Hard 2 at least.

If you're wondering why the blog's called 'Making Medicine Sick' well, back in 1974 in a press conference for the Rumble in the Jungle fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, Ali broke in to poem and said 'Only last week I murdered a rock, done injured a stone, even hospitalised a brick, I'm so mean I make medicine sick.'
